BATON ROUGE, LA – Governor Jeff Landry issued a clarification early Tuesday morning after widespread confusion erupted over his call for LSU to erect a statue of Charlie Kirk.
During Monday’s Turning Point event, Landry had urged the LSU Board of Supervisors to “honor Charlie Kirk with a statue for defending free speech.” But by Tuesday morning, the Governor’s Office released a statement admitting there’d been a misunderstanding, he had actually meant Captain James T. Kirk, of the hit TV series Star Trek.
“The Governor’s intention was to celebrate courage, leadership, and intergalactic diplomacy,” said his press secretary. “Unfortunately, someone in our communications office misread the email from Jeff.”
Landry apologized for the confusion, adding that he still believes LSU should “lead the nation in bold exploration” clarifying that he meant exploration of space, not the political opinions of freshmen.
He went on to say the statue would celebrate LSU’s fearless pursuit of discovery, particularly its ongoing mission to seek out new coaches and bigger buyouts, boldly spending what no university in their right mind has ever spent before.
