CLEMSON, SC – Clemson University announced Sunday that its football stadium will no longer be referred to as “Death Valley,” officially downgrading the longtime nickname to “You’ll Probably Be Fine Valley” following Saturday night’s 51–10 loss to LSU.
University officials said the change came after determining the previous name created unrealistic expectations about the level of danger visiting teams might encounter.
“We still believe this can be a somewhat unpleasant place to play football,” a Clemson spokesman said. “There’s noise. Parking can be difficult. It gets humid. We just don’t feel comfortable promising death anymore.”
The decision came after Clemson traveled to LSU’s Tiger Stadium, which also claims the Death Valley nickname, and allowed the Tigers to settle the dispute without the involvement of attorneys, trademarks or “NFL Players.”
Clemson officials reportedly considered several alternatives, including “Discomfort Valley,” “Valley of Concern” and “Proceed With Caution Valley.”
The university ultimately selected “Moderately Uncomfortable Valley,” saying it better reflects current conditions while leaving room for future improvement.
