BATON ROUGE, LA – District Attorney Hillar Moore has taken a stand by moving to declare the AM Food Mart on Highland Road a “nuisance property.” The store, long known for its dim lighting, late-night loiterers, and multiple shooting incidents, has allegedly become a hub of petty crime and public mischief.
Moore argued that shutting down the Food Mart will make the neighborhood safer. But in an unusually candid aside, he admitted the Food Mart still doesn’t hold a candle to Baton Rouge’s ultimate public hazard: Siegen Lane after dark.
“Sure, you might see a fight in the parking lot or someone bartering with scratch-offs,” Moore said, “but statistically speaking, you’re less likely to lose your life savings, or your front bumper, than if you end up anywhere on Siegen Lane after sundown.”
Local residents seemed torn. “Yeah, that food mart is a mess,” said one nearby shopper, “but at least when I go there I know I’ll come back alive. I can’t say that about getting gas on Siegen at 11pm.”
For now, the Highland Food Mart remains open, offering snacks, smokes, and a rare sense of danger that still feels oddly comforting compared to Siegen Lane after hours.
