NEW ORLEANS, LA – Facing the kind of financial drought usually reserved for abandoned vending machines, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson’s re-election campaign has officially entered barter mode. After raising a mere $155 in the wake of a jail escape and a mistaken inmate release, Hutson’s team is pivoting to alternative donations, namely canned corn, off-brand spaghetti, and, for high-dollar donors, Chef Boyardee.
A spokesperson for the campaign explained, “Monetary contributions have slowed, but we’re rich in shelf-stable enthusiasm.”
Opponents who’ve collectively raised over $160,000 have stuck to traditional cash donations, but Hutson is optimistic her pantry-based approach will resonate with voters who prefer substance over strategy.
Campaign insiders say if contributions don’t improve, they may introduce a tiered rewards program: donate 10 cans and receive a bumper sticker; donate 50 and earn “a heartfelt thank-you plus a microwaveable lasagna.”
“Money isn’t everything,” Hutson’s campaign manager said while eating a cold can of Blue Runner Cream Style Red Beans. “But it definitely helps with signs.”
