BATON ROUGE, LA – City officials have reportedly adopted an ambitious new zoning strategy requiring at least one used tire or custom rim shop every 200 feet along Florida Boulevard between Airline Hwy and Flannery Road.
The ordinance simply formalizes a development pattern that appears to have been successfully implemented without government assistance for years.
“Consistency is important in urban planning,” one official explained. “We don’t want someone driving three blocks down Florida Boulevard wondering where they’re supposed to buy a slightly used 225/60R16.”
The plan reportedly establishes strict requirements for each location, including stacks of tires visible from the roadway, several chrome rims displayed near the entrance and at least three handwritten signs reading TIRE SALE.
Officials say the zoning change honors Florida Boulevard’s evolution from one of Baton Rouge’s premier shopping corridors into what planners are calling a “specialized automotive retail ecosystem.”
Future phases could reduce the required spacing to 100 feet.
City leaders emphasized there’s still plenty of room between tire shops for vape stores and payday lenders.
