BATON ROUGE, LA – With LSU’s season opener approaching, LSU officials are approaching completion off a 20-foot statue honoring quarterback Sam Leavitt, thoughtfully designing it with an easily removable head.
“We believe Sam is the future of LSU football,” one official said. “But we also understand the future can change pretty quickly on third and long with 1:56 left on the clock.”
Officials said the detachable feature will allow crews to replace Leavitt’s likeness with the backup quarterback immediately following his second interception. Additional heads depicting Joe Burrow, JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn will remain in climate-controlled storage for emergencies.
The monument currently depicts Leavitt holding a football in a passing position. Engineers acknowledged the season hasn’t started yet, but called waiting for evidence “inconsistent with Baton Rouge construction standards.”
To reduce future costs, the pedestal will remain permanently engraved with “Our Next Great Quarterback.”
Officials expect the statue to be completed by kickoff and potentially already reconsidered sometime during the second quarter.
