BATON ROUGE, LA – In a quiet but widely accepted shift, residents across Baton Rouge have officially abandoned miles as a unit of measurement, opting instead for a more locally accurate system based on how many red lights a trip requires.
“It’s about a six-light drive if you catch them right, nine if DOTD is feeling creative,” said one resident, clarifying that distance now depends less on geography and more on timing, patience, and emotional stability.
City officials confirmed the change was not formally approved but admitted it better reflects real-world conditions. “Miles don’t account for what actually matters here,” one planner said. “A quarter-mile can be anywhere from one light to a full podcast episode.”
The new system has already been adopted by navigation apps in the area, with directions like “Turn left in two lights, sit through three more, then question your decisions at the fourth.”
Locals say the update has brought a sense of clarity, even if it hasn’t improved travel times.
Local realtors have already begun updating listings, advertising homes as “just three lights from everything you need, five during rush hour.”
