BATON ROUGE, LA – The East Baton Rouge Parish Attorney assured residents this week that they’re now just three more lawsuits away from finally accepting that St. George exists, following yet another legal challenge involving the city’s zoning authority and incorporation date.
Officials stressed that this lawsuit is completely different from the previous ones because it asks many of the same questions using slightly different paperwork.
“This is all part of the healing process,” one official explained. “Denial, anger, bargaining, several lawsuits, more bargaining, and eventually acceptance. We honestly think we’re getting close.”
The latest filing comes despite the Louisiana Supreme Court previously ruling in favor of St. George’s incorporation, prompting many residents to mistakenly believe the matter had finally been settled.
Even Mayor-President Sid Edwards reportedly refused to join the latest lawsuit. “Absolutely not,” Edwards told staff. “I’m not handing those lunatics at The Sadvocate an entire week’s worth of material,” he laughed.
Budget analysts estimated the City-Parish could save millions by accepting St. George, but officials warned that doing so might leave the 40 or 50 attorneys on the payroll with entirely too much free time.
