NEW ORLEANS, LA – Gov. Jeff Landry announced Monday that Jackson Square will officially be renamed “Landry Square,” calling the move an important first step toward repairing his relationship with New Orleans.
“For too long, there has been unnecessary tension between my administration and the city,” Landry said. “I believe seeing my name prominently displayed in the heart of the French Quarter every day will finally begin the healing process.”
Under the plan, existing Jackson Square signs will be replaced immediately, while maps, tourism brochures and carriage tour scripts will be updated over the coming weeks.
Landry also reportedly requested preliminary designs for replacing the Andrew Jackson statue with a significantly larger statue of himself driving a Ford F250 platinum instead of riding that horse “which no one rides anymore” according to the governor.
New Orleans officials have already expressed concerns about the proposal, which Landry described as encouraging.
“This is exactly the kind of productive dialogue we were hoping to start,” he said.
Landry said additional reconciliation efforts are being considered, but declined to confirm reports that Bourbon Street could soon become Governor Landry Avenue.
