BATON ROUGE, LA – Gov. Jeff Landry warned SEC officials Tuesday that LSU could be moved to the NFC South if the conference continues asking questions about who is actually eligible to play football for the Tigers.
Landry issued the warning as LSU’s increasingly complicated eligibility dispute with the SEC entered territory that attorneys described as “pretty much completely uncharted.”
“If the SEC wants to keep asking whether these guys are NFL players, we’ll put LSU in a conference where that’s actually encouraged,” Landry said. “Problem solved.”
Sources say the governor has already instructed attorneys to determine exactly what paperwork is required to move a public university into the National Football League. So far, nobody has found any.
That reportedly has not slowed the process.
Landry said LSU would fit naturally alongside New Orleans, Atlanta, Carolina and Tampa Bay and noted the move would immediately eliminate virtually every eligibility dispute currently facing the program.
NFL officials reportedly attempted to explain that governors cannot simply place universities into professional football conferences.
