BATON ROUGE, LA – A large crowd gathered Monday at the Louisiana State Capitol to defend the state’s current congressional map, at least, those who could find it. Nearly half the demonstrators arrived late after reportedly misreading the directions printed on the same map they were fighting to protect.
Organizers say confusion began when volunteers handed out printed directions to the Capitol, which several attendees mistook for the new congressional layout. One caravan tried to follow “District 6” all the way from Baton Rouge through Lafayette, St. Landry, and back again before realizing it wasn’t a travel itinerary.
“It’s kind of ironic,” said one protester, still holding an upside-down map. “After trying to follow it, I get why people want to start over.”
Lawmakers declined to comment but later admitted attendance was “above expectations” considering half the crowd spent the first hour stuck in I-10 traffic.
