BATON ROUGE, La. – In an unprecedented move, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board announced late Monday that all public schools will briefly reopen Tuesday morning—just long enough to formally shut down due to impending bad weather.
“We take school closures very seriously,” said a district spokesperson. “Since we were already closed for Mardi Gras, we felt it was only right to reopen for a few minutes before shutting back down for safety reasons.”
Despite forecasts predicting nothing more than light rain and mild wind gusts, officials insisted the conditions warranted immediate action.
Students will be required to check in at 8:00 AM before immediately being dismissed at 8:05 AM. School buses will run on their normal routes, giving children the authentic experience of sitting in traffic just to turn around and go home.
Officials reassured parents that even if the forecast changes, schools will still close out of ‘an abundance of caution’—and because they already printed the signs.
