NEW ORLEANS, La. – In a stunning legal victory for wanderlust, a New Orleans judge ruled that the City Council’s attempt to block Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s travel was unconstitutional, citing the rarely-invoked “Treat Yo’ Self” clause buried somewhere between the Louisiana State Constitution and an old Parks and Recreation rerun.
City attorneys had argued that the mayor’s frequent, publicly funded trips were “non-essential.” But the court disagreed, ruling that “mental rejuvenation through out-of-state brunches” qualifies as self-care and, therefore, falls under protected rights.
“This isn’t about travel,” Cantrell told reporters while boarding a flight. “This is about the freedom to find yourself—sometimes in Atlanta, sometimes in Aspen.”
Council members say they’ll appeal, but insiders report they’ve quietly started applying for TSA PreCheck just in case. Meanwhile, the mayor is reportedly considering a diplomatic trip to Aruba to “study sustainable hammocks.”
