CLEMSON, SC – Clemson’s football team has been granted permission to bring its ceremonial cannon aboard its flight to LSU this weekend after airport officials determined the weapon poses absolutely no safety threat.
Officials were initially alarmed after Clemson informed the airline it would be traveling to Baton Rouge with a cannon. Security personnel were immediately notified and prepared to inspect the potentially dangerous piece of artillery.
“Obviously, the word ‘cannon’ raised some concerns,” an airport official said. “Then we saw it.”
After a brief inspection, officials determined the cannon could safely travel with the team and may even qualify as a carry-on.
“We considered putting it in the overhead compartment, but honestly, it’ll probably fit under the seat in front of them,” the official added.
Clemson officials thanked airport personnel for accommodating one of the school’s most cherished traditions but strongly denied reports that a flight attendant had offered to store the cannon in the captain’s lapel pocket.
The cannon is expected to arrive in Baton Rouge sometime Friday, provided nobody accidentally leaves it at baggage claim.
