NEW ORLEANS, LA – Faced with months of unanswered maintenance requests, residents of the Oakwood Palms apartment complex in New Orleans have announced a bold new strategy: sending rent invoices to the building’s rodent population.
“We figured if management won’t evict them, they might as well help cover the bills,” said longtime tenant DeShawn McClendon, taping a $900 past-due notice to a rat hole near his fridge.
The complex, which boasts “luxury living” on its faded website, has allegedly ignored multiple complaints of rodents “paying zero deposit and getting full kitchen access.” One resident claims a particularly assertive rat has already sublet a cabinet space to a family of possums.
Property management responded by suggesting tenants “enjoy the natural urban ecosystem” and reminding them rent is due by the 5th.
The tenants are now exploring options to form a Rat Homeowners Association, where rodent members would be fined for loud squeaking and unsanitary living conditions.
