BATON ROUGE, LA – Louisiana’s governor urged families Monday to review their gumbo plans as temperatures across the state are expected to approach the high 60s this weekend.
Residents were encouraged to check supplies of chicken, sausage, onions, bell peppers and celery and designate one responsible adult to monitor the roux at all times.
“We’re not trying to alarm anyone, but once that thermometer starts with a six, things can deteriorate quickly,” the governor said. “Families need to be prepared.”
Grocery stores across Louisiana have reportedly increased sausage inventories, while residents have begun pulling large gumbo pots from cabinets for the first time since temperatures climbed above 75 degrees.
Families were also advised to establish a gumbo meeting place, confirm adequate rice supplies and resolve any outstanding potato salad disputes before cooler air arrives.
Officials said the state will continue monitoring conditions and could elevate Louisiana to Gumbo Readiness Level 2 if anyone is spotted wearing a light jacket.
