BATON ROUGE, LA – Seven years after voters approved St. George, local resident Brian Fontenot remains confident the city won’t last six months, a prediction he has renewed regularly since 2015.
His latest warning followed the release of St. George’s 2050 growth plan, which Fontenot called “pretty ambitious for a city that probably won’t make it through Thanksgiving.”
“They can put whatever they want on paper,” said Fontenot, opening a Facebook comment he originally drafted during the incorporation election. “Just wait until they have to actually run a city.”
When informed that St. George was already doing that, Fontenot clarified that he meant for longer.
Fontenot has attributed the city’s continued existence to temporary factors, including revenue, leadership and residents wanting to live there.
He dismissed St. George’s multimillion-dollar surplus as a bookkeeping error because it contradicted his Facebook comment, then vowed to spend an 11th year clicking the laughing emoji on every St. George post from one of his burner accounts.
