NEW ORLEANS, LA – New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams confirmed Monday that he mistakenly hired one of the seven escaped inmates as an Assistant District Attorney last week.
According to Williams, the man—whose identity is being withheld “for legal and deeply embarrassing reasons”—applied with a resumé that simply read: “Deep knowledge of the justice system.” Williams hired him on the spot.
“I was impressed by his passion for reducing sentences and firsthand familiarity with the court process,” said Williams. “In hindsight, maybe too firsthand.”
The escapee allegedly worked three full days, filing motions to dismiss over “two-hunnit” felony cases and persuading a judge to dismiss a carjacking case because “technically, the keys were left in the ignition, so it’s community property.” Coworkers became suspicious when he kept offering legal advice that began with “Back when I was locked up last week…”
Williams called the incident “an unfortunate clerical lapse” but praised the fugitive’s performance. “Honestly, he was one of our most efficient hires, refusing charges on more cases than anyone else on the payroll.”
The office says it is “reviewing internal procedures,” but stopped short of apologizing, noting the fugitive “had a shorter rap sheet than several current staffers.”
