BATON ROUGE, LA – In response to growing public frustration over violent offenders repeatedly being released and immediately re-arrested, local court officials announced Thursday the creation of Baton Rouge’s first-ever “Repeat Offender Tournament of Champions,” a competitive bracket-style event honoring the city’s most relentless career criminals.
According to organizers, eligibility is limited to offenders charged with violent crimes who were released by judges and then successfully committed additional violent crimes before their next court appearance.
Court officials say the tournament format was inspired after several suspects began statistically outperforming LSU baseball players in repeat appearances.
“This isn’t about punishment anymore,” one official explained while unveiling a giant March Madness-style bracket outside the courthouse. “At a certain point, you have to respect the consistency.”
Categories reportedly include “Fastest Re-Arrest After Bond,” “Most Firearms Possessed While Prohibited,” and “Best Multi-Parish Crime Spree.”
The championship trophy, a gold-plated ankle monitor mounted on a marble base, will reportedly be awarded to the offender whose post-release criminal activity caused the greatest number of WBRZ push alerts in a single calendar year.
Sources say several judges are expected to attend the ceremony, although many are reportedly concerned about accidentally recognizing half the guest list from last week’s docket alone.
