ST GEORGE, LA – The Louisiana Department of Transportation held a press conference Tuesday beneath the freshly completed I-10 Pecue Lane Interchange to reassure motorists that the new diverging diamond is, in their words, “exactly like a regular intersection, but wrong in a very controlled and professional way.”
Officials stressed that drivers are not actually switching to the wrong side of the road, they are simply “borrowing it briefly” for efficiency. Diagrams were provided. So were calming breathing exercises.
Representatives from Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development explained the design reduces conflict points and improves traffic flow. They also acknowledged that it assumes motorists will read overhead signs, remain in clearly marked lanes, and resist the urge to panic halfway across the bridge.
Local drivers, however, described their first experience as “momentarily becoming British” before being slingshotted back onto I-10 at highway speed with a new appreciation for life.
To ease concerns, the state confirmed that flashing arrows, giant pavement markings, and guardrails are all intentional. “If you feel confused,” one official said, “that just means it’s working.”
