NEW ORLEANS, LA – Antoine Massey, one of the inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish jail, was finally captured after six weeks on the run and right around the corner from the jail. The unlikely tip that led to his arrest? The jail’s IT department noticed someone binge watching Shawshank Redemption on the jail’s own Wi-Fi and Netflix Account.
“He never logged out,” said one deputy. “It was still under the profile ‘Inmate Rec Room,’ and someone had rated Escape from Alcatraz five stars.”
Authorities say Massey had been living comfortably in a nearby neighborhood, quietly mooching off the jail’s unsecured Wi-Fi to binge-watch a lineup of prison break content.
Suspicion grew when the facility’s shared Netflix account began racking up titles like Shawshank Redemption, Escape from Alcatraz, and World’s Toughest Prisons under the “Continue Watching” section, all streamed well after curfew.
Officials have since updated the Wi-Fi password and deleted the Netflix profile, though not before Orange Is the New Black mysteriously received a thumbs down.
