PORT ALLEN, LA – A high-speed police chase through West Baton Rouge Parish came to an unexpectedly calm end Tuesday evening when the fleeing driver slowed down, activated his hazard lights, and pulled over just feet from the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge.
According to deputies, the suspect had been leading officers on a 15-minute pursuit that began over a broken taillight but escalated dramatically once officers realized the driver was also uninsured, unregistered, and driving a Nissan Altima with a missing bumper.
Witnesses say the chase ended when the suspect saw a road sign reading “I-10 Next Left” and realized it was almost 4:00 p.m. The man abruptly pulled his vehicle to the shoulder and surrendered.
Authorities praised the suspect’s “rare moment of self-awareness,” noting that rush-hour traffic on the bridge is often more punishing than the state correctional system.
“He made the right call,” said one deputy. “I-10 at 4 p.m.? That’s a life sentence.”
The suspect reportedly told officers, “At least in jail, I know how long I’ll be stuck—unlike I-10 anytime after 1:00.”
