BRUSLY, LA – As the town of Addis basks in the glow of near-celebrity following resident John Foster’s run to the American Idol finale, their neighbor to the north, Brusly, is demanding equal recognition.
“Addis gets one guy who can sing, and suddenly they’re Nashville?” said lifelong Brusly resident Wayne Thibodeaux. “Meanwhile, we had a guy win a bedroom set, blender and $350 cash on Wheel of Fortune back in ’03, but all of a sudden Addis is the new capital of West Baton Rouge?”
Brusly residents gathered outside the town hall Monday morning, holding hand-drawn signs reading WE EXIST TOO and OUR CHILI COOK-OFF WAS ON THE NEWS ONCE. Town leaders say the sudden attention on Addis has caused a sharp rise in identity crises all over the parish.
“It’s hard,” said one Brusly council member. “People used to say, ‘Where’s Brusly?’ Now they’re saying, ‘Oh, is that near where that American Idol kid’s from?’ It’s humiliating.”
In a desperate bid for relevance, the Brusly mayor has unveiled a “Remember Us” campaign featuring bumper stickers, yard signs, and a very uncomfortable TikTok dance recorded by the guy who owns the bait shop’s niece and her boyfriend.
“We don’t need to win some fancy singing contest to matter,” said Thibodeaux, arms crossed proudly in front of the local Sonic. “We just need folks to quit acting like Addis is the only town in West Baton Rouge with running water and a Dollar General. We’ve got both too—plus a guy who can kinda play the spoons.”
