New Orleans, LA – After 11 inmates casually exited the Orleans Parish jail Friday morning, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson says she’s now “revisiting” the longstanding prison facility policy of “Last One Out, Lock Up.”
“Look, it worked for years,” Hutson told reporters. “We just never anticipated that everyone might leave at once.”
The escape, which wasn’t discovered until breakfast trays were short, has prompted what the sheriff’s office is calling a “policy refresh.” Among the new ideas being floated: assigning someone to actually watch the doors.
While officials suspect the inmates used a maintenance corridor to escape, one deputy suggested they may have just “followed the rats out like some kind of Disney prison musical.”
In a written statement, the sheriff’s office reminded the public that “jail security is a community effort,” and encouraged residents to report any groups of men carrying pillowcases and looking overly triumphant.
Meanwhile, one recaptured inmate reportedly called 9-1-1 and turned himself in after Uber accidentally dropped him off in the lower 9th Ward.
