BATON ROUGE, La. – In his first day on the job, Louisiana’s new DMV chief — who also happens to be the state Fire Marshal — uncovered a shocking truth: the agency’s central computer system still recognizes Edwin Edwards as the sitting governor.
“We tried to process a license renewal and it auto-filled ‘Governor Edwin Edwards’ as the approving authority,” said one baffled employee. “Then it asked if we wanted to dial-up the Capitol.”
Technicians traced the issue to the DMV’s mainframe, a refrigerator-sized unit last updated during the Nixon administration. “The system appears to be running on a modified version of Oregon Trail code,” one IT consultant said while blowing dust off a floppy disk labeled ‘Executive Override – In Case of Huey Long’s Return’.
Asked for comment, the mainframe responded with a dial-up screech, ejected a VHS tape of Matlock, and declared war on Mississippi.
Governor Landry is currently debating whether to upgrade the system or just seal the room and declare it a historical landmark.
