PORT ALLEN, La. – West Baton Rouge voters made a strong stand for anti-overeducation this week, rejecting a property tax renewal that would have funded both drainage improvements and local libraries. When asked why, many pointed to a growing sentiment that the community has, quote, “readed all it’s gonna read.”

“We done readed ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ like six times,” said parish resident Travis LeJeune. “What else they got? Books with too many big words? No thanks.”
Opponents of the tax say library spending has gotten out of control, with rumors circulating that some facilities had started offering new books and even computers. “I once checked out a book in 1996 and I still get anxiety when I drive past the library,” said one Addis woman, glancing around as if the book police might be listening.
West Baton Rouge now enters an interesting new era where no one will be reading future flood warnings—not out of defiance, but because they can’t.
