BATON ROUGE, LA – Gov. Jeff Landry signed an executive order Friday morning officially renaming Toledo Bend Reservoir “Lake Louisiana,” while giving neighboring Texas 30 days to stop using it.
Landry said the move was inspired by President Donald Trump’s recent decision to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” calling it proof that Louisiana has been far too generous with its bodies of water.
“For decades, Texas has been using nearly half of our lake without paying a dime,” Landry said. “They have plenty of lakes over there. Go use one of those.”
Under the order, Texas fishermen will have 30 days to retrieve boats, trotlines and any coolers currently floating on the Louisiana side before state officials begin enforcing the new boundary.
Texas officials immediately disputed the order, pointing out that the reservoir literally forms part of the border between the two states.
Landry dismissed the argument, saying borders are exactly the kind of technicalities that allowed Texas to get away with this for so long.
Louisiana officials confirmed the next phase of the plan will involve determining whether the Sabine River is actually necessary for Texas.
