BATON ROUGE, LA – State officials confirmed Thursday that motorists attempting to report hands-free driving violations are themselves committing the same offense, creating what lawmakers described as “a rare moment of total legal symmetry.”
Under the newly enforced law, drivers are prohibited from holding or interacting with a phone while operating a vehicle. This includes calling police to report another driver who is actively holding a phone, scrolling social media, or filming a traffic stop for future Facebook arguments.
“This law is about safety,” officials said, adding that dialing 911 while driving is dangerous, unless it is an emergency, which this is not, because everyone involved is already breaking the law equally.
State police recommended that concerned citizens commit license plate numbers to memory, pull over somewhere safe, forget the plate number, then continue on with their day. Alternatively, drivers may stare intensely at the offending motorist and whisper “I hope they learn” to themselves.
Authorities stressed that enforcement will be consistent, noting that officers cannot legally receive reports from drivers unless those reports were made before the vehicle started moving.
