CENTRAL, LA – The mayor of Central, Wade Evans, says a $150 million surf lake project is just the first ripple in a wave of city improvements he has planned. While the man-made surf park will bring seven-foot artificial waves to Central, the mayor insists the city must also tackle its other great natural disaster, traffic on Sullivan Road.
Enter the gondola system. Officials are floating the idea of installing ski-resort style lifts over Sullivan, promising commuters a cool ride above the daily logjam of SUVs and school buses. “It’s about vision,” said Evans. “We’re already building an ocean where there isn’t one, so why not add a sky highway?”
Skeptics worry the gondolas could clash with Central’s small town feel, though supporters argue nothing screams charm like dangling in a plastic bubble over a surf lake.
City planners say feasibility studies are underway while suggesting the gondolas could also double as evacuation devices for when the surf lake inevitably overflows, flooding the city.
