BATON ROUGE, LA – Calling the recent indictment of Louisiana’s Attorney General “the educational equivalent of watching someone fail an open-book test,” Governor Jeff Landry announced early Friday that he has signed an executive order requiring every newly elected New Orleans public official to complete the full Schoolhouse Rock civics series before taking office.
According to the order, officials must first watch all episodes covering the Constitution, separation of powers, and how laws work before passing a 25-question civics exam with a minimum score of 90%. Those who fail will be required to repeatedly watch I’m Just a Bill until state instructors are convinced they understand the difference between political disagreements and actual criminal conduct.
The program also includes complimentary pocket copies of the Louisiana Constitution, with the most important sections highlighted for convenience, along with a gold-star completion certificate authorizing graduates to once again participate in representative government without constant adult supervision.
State officials said the curriculum was developed after concluding that “a refresher couldn’t hurt.”
The executive order concludes by reminding participants that successfully finishing Schoolhouse Rock does not automatically qualify them for higher office, but it is considered a promising start.
