HAMMOND, LA – After uncovering alarming levels of toxic metals in Lake Maurepas, a Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) scientist has been promptly reassigned to a new role, managing inventory at the campus gift shop. University officials praised the researcher’s “passion for local matters” but clarified that gift shop staffing “better aligns with institutional priorities and public perception.”
The scientist revealed pollution levels that could harm both people and wildlife, but officials dismissed the report as accurate yet “too upsetting to be useful right now.” To maintain community trust, SLU has launched a new product line including “Trust the Water” mugs, “Go Green, Not Investigative” tote bags, and a commemorative “Maurepas: The Metallic Bayou” tumbler.
When asked for comment, university leadership emphasized the importance of balancing scientific inquiry with donor comfort. “We support research,” said one official, “as long as it doesn’t result in headlines.”
The university declined further comment, citing an ongoing partnership with the Lake Maurepas Tourism Board.
