NEW ORLEANS, La. – After a judge ordered the Cantrell administration to cough up $10 million owed to the Orleans Parish School Board, Mayor LaToya Cantrell reportedly handed over a post-dated check, casually telling board members, “Y’all don’t run that yet, I’m waiting on my taxes to hit, k?”
The payment stems from property tax revenue the city had been withholding, despite a previous $90 million settlement agreement that was never finalized. With the courts stepping in to demand at least $10 million immediately, the mayor’s office responded with what one insider called “a creative financial solution.”
The Cantrell administration was reportedly negotiating an alternative payment plan, offering the Orleans Parish School Board $10 million in “store credit” redeemable for expedited permit approvals and a VIP table at the next Mayor’s Ball.
Meanwhile, school officials were checking online to see what a City of New Orleans gift card might fetch on the open market.
