BATON ROUGE, La. – In an effort to better prepare Louisiana drivers for the realities of the state’s aging infrastructure, the Department of Transportation and Development announced the launch of its new “Bridge Survivor Bootcamp,” to be held at the site of the recently collapsed casino bridge in downtown Baton Rouge.
Participants will undergo rigorous training exercises, including running across unstable platforms, blindfolded rope crossings, and timed escapes from simulated crumbling structures. DOTD officials say the program is aimed at “building confidence in unpredictable environments,” a skill they describe as “essential for Louisiana commuting.”
The bootcamp announcement comes just weeks after reports flagged eight more Louisiana bridges for collapse risk evaluations, highlighting what DOTD called a “unique opportunity to get ahead of the problem, sort of.”
Participants who successfully complete the course will earn a certificate labeled “Qualified to Cross Bridges at Own Risk,” which DOTD says may soon become a required credential for state driver’s licenses.
