ST. GEORGE, LA – What began as a routine afternoon errand last Spring has officially entered its second year, as a St. George resident celebrated the one-year anniversary of his ongoing attempt to turn left from Pecue Lane onto Highland Road.
Family members gathered along the shoulder Saturday afternoon with a folding table, cake, and a banner reading “Happy 1 Year Waiting,” marking what they described as “an emotional but expected milestone.” The man, who has advanced roughly two car lengths since last April, said the experience has fundamentally reshaped his outlook.
“You stop thinking in minutes,” he said, watching another 150 cars turn off Highland without letting Mrs. Johnson in her 2003 Town Car out. “You start thinking in phases of life. I missed my daughter’s high school graduation sitting here, but I did receive a card from her since I had the foresight to have my mail forwarded here sometime last Fall.”
According to relatives, the attempt began nearly a year ago, and that was before the Pecue-I10 interchange opened and transformed the intersection into what engineers now describe as “a continuous, unmoving line of regret.”
DOTD and MoveBR officials confirmed improvements remain under review, noting the project is currently in its seventh round of studies to determine whether a problem even really exists.
“It’s not like we had a nine-year heads-up on this new interstate interchange coming, so we’d have time to upgrade this intersection,” said one official. “It was only eight years, which is basically how long it takes us just to form a committee to decide how many study committees we’ll need for this project.”
The driver remains committed, stating he has “no intention of turning around or making a right just to escape.”
