Moreno Expresses Concern That Federal Raids May Create an “Unwelcoming Atmosphere” for Criminals in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA – In a statement that puzzled even seasoned City Hall observers, Councilwoman Helena Moreno voiced deep concern that incoming Border Patrol sweeps could create what she called an “unwelcoming atmosphere” for the city’s extensive and well-established criminal community. Moreno will not become mayor until 2026, but she assured residents that she intends to begin worrying about federal law enforcement immediately.

Moreno explained that New Orleans has spent decades cultivating a “unique environment” where carjackers, burglars, and armed robbers can flourish with minimal disruption. She warned that sudden appearances by trained federal agents could undo years of sustained chaos, creating what she described as “a chilling effect on criminals simply trying to go about their business.”

District Attorney Jason Williams also voiced alarm, but for a different reason. He noted that because the arrests will lead to federal charges, they’ll be completely out of his reach. Williams cautioned that an influx of crimes he can’t dismiss threatens to “undermine the delicate balance” his office has worked hard to maintain, where nearly every defendant gets a second, third, or twelfth chance.

Several residents noted that the statement was the first time they had seen a city leader show this much passion about anything involving crime. One 9th ward resident said the councilwoman’s priorities were “refreshingly consistent” with the city’s tradition of treating violent offenders like a sensitive tourism population that must not be disturbed.

Moreno closed by promising to fight for fairness. She wants every criminal to feel safe, supported, and empowered in New Orleans until she officially takes office.
