BATON ROUGE, LA – An audit has revealed nearly $30,000 worth of equipment unaccounted for across BREC facilities, but park officials insist the losses are actually “an economic development strategy.”
In a statement, BREC described the missing gear, which included lawnmowers, power tools, and sports equipment, as a “micro-loan program” aimed at supporting Baton Rouge’s bustling pawn shop economy. “We don’t see this as theft or negligence,” said one spokesperson. “We see it as community reinvestment. Every gently used weed eater sitting in a pawn shop window is a billboard for recreation.”
Officials further claimed the initiative helps residents access equipment at “affordable secondhand prices” while allowing BREC to avoid the hassle of storage and maintenance. “Honestly, losing things is cheaper than upkeep,” the spokesperson added.
Local pawn shop owners praised the move, reporting a sudden spike in treadmills with faint BREC stickers still attached. Residents, meanwhile, were encouraged to check area shops before buying their own gear.
“It’s not missing,” BREC clarified. “It’s just off-campus, working hard for the Baton Rouge economy.”
